Little Sparks: Spring Transitions to Kindergarten
Transitions are moments of possibility, and our youngest learners deserve the best start. Little Sparks: Ignite Learning was introduced this spring to strengthen early connections between children, families, and schools. Developed in partnership with Early Years and child care teams, the program supported children entering Kindergarten by offering opportunities to explore play-based learning, meet educators, and build familiarity with the school environment before September.
Implemented in five schools, including four Empower Excellence sites, Little Sparks reflects DDSB’s commitment to readiness, belonging, and well-being in the early years. It also advances system actions to enhance early transitions, strengthen family engagement, and optimize the reciprocal relationship between schools and child-care providers. Each program was co-delivered with community partners, creating coordinated, caring entry experiences that reflect the unique strengths and needs of each school community.
By aligning early years programming with the Empower Excellence Strategy, Little Sparks helps ensure that every child and family feels welcomed, supported, and prepared for success. Through connection, play, and relationship-building, this initiative reinforces that learning begins with belonging, and that every child’s journey into school should begin with confidence, curiosity, and joy.
