Building Momentum in Math: A Strategy for Long-Term Success
At the DDSB, we know that math is more than numbers—it’s a gateway to problem-solving, critical thinking, and confidence. That’s why our 2024–2025 Math Achievement Action Plan focused on building a foundation for sustainable growth.
This year, that foundation took shape. Across our priority schools, educators demonstrated increased confidence, intentionality, and commitment to high-impact practices. Through targeted professional learning, collaborative planning, and responsive support, we’ve seen real, measurable growth in math instruction and student learning.
The 2024–2025 Math Achievement Action Plan was developed in alignment with the Ministry’s Taking Action in Mathematics framework. The Ministry identified 23 DDSB Priority Schools for focus on mathematics improvement. The Plan focused on:

Curriculum Alignment: Supporting the use of high-impact instructional practices (HIIPs) within the revised Ontario Mathematics Curriculum.

Mathematics Content Knowledge for Teaching: Building educator expertise through professional learning, coaching, and collaborative inquiry.

Knowing the Mathematics Learner: Using data and student voice to inform relevant, responsive instructional decisions.
The progress made this year is significant; not just in outcomes, which showed that approximately 77% of students who were progressing in math with difficulty have demonstrated academic improvement by year end (June 2025) - an encouraging improvement from 75% in March, but in the relationships and structures now in place. These shifts position us to deepen our collective impact throughout 2025–2026.
To facilitate deepening of impact, a symposium for educators in priority schools was planned, and set of key mathematics resources that were initially piloted in select classrooms within priority schools were made available to all educators in priority schools in September.
The foundational changes in practice and planning established this year are designed to take root and flourish, supporting long-term change and equitable achievement across the system. Our momentum is clear, and our commitment is unwavering.
