Indigenous Education Advisory Circle
The Indigenous Education Advisory Circle meets regularly throughout the school year to guide, inform, co-plan, and co-lead Indigenous Education initiatives across the DDSB. This collaborative table brings together representatives from the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, and the Oshawa and Durham Métis Council, along with Indigenous representatives from local post-secondary institutions, community organizations, and members of the DDSB’s Indigenous Education and Land-Based Learning teams.
Grounded in trust, reciprocity, and a shared commitment to supporting Indigenous student success and well-being, the Advisory Circle provides cultural and educational guidance, reviews ongoing initiatives, and identifies priorities that reflect community-identified needs. The group plays a vital role in shaping programs, professional learning, and system direction—ensuring that decisions are informed by Indigenous voices, lived experiences, and ways of knowing.
This collaborative leadership is reflected in several key initiatives supported and shaped by the Advisory Circle, including the NBE Book Festival, the Land-Based Learning Conference In Good Relation, the annual Louis Riel Day Flag Raising, and a range of learning opportunities and community events that honour Indigenous histories, rights, and contemporary contributions.
Through these ongoing conversations and partnerships, the DDSB continues to strengthen relationships with rights-holders and Indigenous partners, uphold Treaty responsibilities, and advance meaningful and authentic Indigenous Education throughout the district.
