Addressing Anti-Black Racism
Anti-Black Racism Action Team
The Anti-Black Racism Action Team provides perspectives, insights, expertise and lived experiences from diverse Black communities to support the implementation of action items in the DDSB’s Compendium of Action for Black Student Success 2.0 (updated in 2024). The Team also engages Black communities across the DDSB to share information and seek input and feedback on initiatives for Black students, families and employees.
Anti-Black Racism Advisory Committee
The Durham District School Board has established an Anti-Black Racism Advisory Committee. This committee acts in a strategic advisory role to the Board of Trustees to support the DDSB in addressing intersectional anti-Black racism and to support student achievement and well-being for Black students, as is required under the DDSB’s Human Rights, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Racism policy.
After the committee heard a presentation about the direct, positive impact of Black graduation coaches, they made a strong recommendation: increase the number of Black graduation coaches to expand their reach across the District. When the Board of Trustees reviewed the budget, they understood that representation and identity-affirming guidance and mentorship matter, and they approved funding for an additional coach. This was more than a budget decision: it was a commitment for more support, more connection, and more opportunities to address learning and well-being barriers for Black students across our schools.
